Lixte Biotechnology Holdings, Inc. (Lixte) is a cancer therapeutics and diagnostics company dedicated to bringing improved treatments of human cancers to clinical practice.
Lixte recognizes that competing effectively at the highest level of drug development and creating a successful cancer therapeutics company requires access to multiple highly specialized types of expertise. These disciplines include scientific (molecular and biology, proteomics, biochemistry, chemistry, pharmacology, physiology, and toxicology) financial, regulatory, legal and administrative skills. Lixte’s strategy is to leverage its intellectual resources by acquiring access to the necessary expert knowledge and technical capabilities in each of these disciplines through scientific academic and commercial collaborations, incentivized consultants and advisors, and the purchase of specific technical services rather than by investing in an enormously expensive in-house employee and technical infrastructure that is likely to continuously need modification.
Since receiving its first funding in 2006, Lixte has filed patent applications on the nature and uses of two distinct classes of pharmacologic agents. Both groups of drugs have anti-cancer activity in animal models of several types of human cancers. In addition, Lixte has filed patent applications jointly with the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke, National Institutes of Health, on the use of Lixte’s compounds to treat specific types of cancer including glioblastoma multiforme, the most common and almost uniformly fatal brain tumor of adults, and neuroblastoma and medulloblastoma, the most common type of cancer and most common type of brain tumor in children, respectively. Based on recent discoveries, Lixte believes the therapeutic benefit of some of its compounds will extend to, at least, several of the most common cancers including breast cancer (see Research and Product Development).
